Little Life

Photographer’s comment

Macro photography isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. When people think of sea life, it generally involves sharks, dolphins and turtles, but sometimes the most fascinating world is right under our noses and we glide right past it. We can be completely unaware of an entire habitat with myriad species in marvellous technicolour.

At first glance, a marine environment can look bland, even messy and litter ridden. While I certainly don’t condone adding to the litter problem, some of these places provide safe haven for quite unique other-worldly species.

Divers who enjoy the show at this scale will know two things: Firstly, that it’s perfectly possible to do an entire dive on a one metre-squared patch of interesting sea floor; and secondly that the term ‘muck diving’ isn’t quite as drab and grim as it might sound.
